The Ask
Working with the founder of Kllect, and data scientists, I was asked to craft an experience that would uphold a complex set of data to serve users with an aggregated collection of technology videos based on user interests. These videos were from a collection of reputable technology news sources.
The Audience & Research
To understand our user (the “techie”), we conducted primary (surveys and interviews) and secondary research (competitive market analysis) to understand how self-defined “techies” regularly consumed technology videos. Our findings presented the following insights:
Techies “hacked” products like Google Alerts and Reddit in order to get content for their specific interests.
Upcoming and new topics were not known to techies unless they heard of them through friends and online communities.
In terms of viewing, techies prefer to have a glance of content prior to viewing. Also, when viewing a video, they typically stated that they did not watch entire videos, but rather skimmed.
The Experience’s Design
Based on the feedback we gathered from the user, we crafted 4 pillars to ensure the design catered to our techie audience.
Be experimental, but function is first.
Get started as quick as possible; ask only what you need.
Focus on the content.
Make it theirs (the user’s).
The Supporting Design
In addition to the product design, as the only designer on the team, I took part in creating the marketing elements of the product. This included a jumpstart web page as well as the App Icon and App Store material.
The Future & Learnings
The Kllect app is currently not available on the App Store due to a switch in focus, but upon ending its run, it had a 5 star rating. We are currently looking at other opportunities to leverage the system and AI created in Kllect for other parallel interests.
